STUDENTS at Kyambogo University yesterday went on strike over non-payment of faculty allowance.
Faculty allowance is paid to government-sponsored students to enable them purchase materials and tools needed for the programmes they are undertaking at the university.
At least 400 students marched to the main administrative building at 9:00am chanting slogans and yelling at the university authorities.
The students said the university authorities allegedly began promising the allowances last year. They said each of them was entitled to at least sh400,000.
“We are aware that the money was released from the Ministry of Finance last year. The administrators asked our representatives to submit the list of our requirements and they purchase the items for us.
“The problem is that the administrators are not being transparent. We want them to come and address us,” one student said.
Stella Muhereza, the university spokesperson, said she could not comment because she had just arrived in office.
