THE Katikkiro of Buganda, Joseph Ssemwogerere, has said non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should exercise transparency by accounting for the money and services they offer.

“People tend to think that accountability means showing only expenditure and income, but it goes further to display all the activities offered in a specific time,” he said.

He was on Wednesday handing over cheques to 78 women groups in Wakiso at the district headquarters.

He also handed over construction materials to 13 primary schools in the district, a donation from Voluntary Action for Development (VAD), an NGO.

Ssemwogerere said accountability improves service delivery and leads to more support from the public.

VAD provides loans and encourages women to set up small income-generating activities.

It receives funding from Friends of Uganda-Germany and the German government.

Present were the German Ambassador, Klaus Holderbaum, VAD director Ben Male, Friends of Uganda coordinator Ilse Schummer, Wakiso resident district commissioner Margaret Kasija and other district officials.
