The trend is catching on. First, cigarette manufacturers, Benson and Hedges customised one of the bars in Ange Noir. Months later, they did the same thing to the bar in Silk Royale. Now Nile Bank have followed suit with their own customised bar at the members-only, Uganda Golf Club on what was once Acacia Avenue.
The horse-shoe-shaped bar on Victoria Terrace was literally wrapped in Nile Bank livery - their slogan plastered across the lower half of the bar. The theme for the launch was “Happy Hour — 6:30pm to 7:30pm.” Unlike most launches, this one was sedate - bankers are after all sedate and rather stiff people. I also doubt that the members of the golf club would have appreciated the hordes of scantily clad girls usually associated with launches prancing about in their club.
The Nile Bank team, lead by PRO Lilliane Barenzi and Patience Aniku, the Product Development Manager, went round dishing out Nile Bank baseball caps to rather bemused club members who wondered what all the fuss was about. Health Minister Jim Muhwezi was there, and though he was presented with a cap, he did not wear it there and then — perhaps he is not a Nile Bank customer. Hmm!
As the evening wore on and activity at the bar began to pick up, the “happy hour” was almost over. Aniku wasted no time issuing strict instructions that the bar be closed at the designated hour. All that changed when the Bank's General Manager, Richard Byarugaba sauntered up pleading for a gin and tonic, which kept the bar open up for an extra 45 minutes. Ends
