Friendly hyena males are sexy
Friendly rather than aggressive behaviour is the way to win the ladies, judging by research into hyenas’ mating patterns by British and German scientists published on Wednesday.

Scientists used genetic techniques to study the mating tactics used by three clans of spotted hyenas from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Male hyenas that tried to be friendly rather than aggressive had far more luck with the ladies, according to their study.

New way to grow sugar
The Australian sugar Industry said on Wednesday that it had achieved a breakthrough which would deliver up to 200 times more sugar cane plants from the same stalk of cane than conventional propagation methods.

It would significantly improve the industries ability to respond to disease outbreaks, the government-backed Bereau of Sugar Experiment stations said. It would also greatly reduce the release time for new cane varieties. Australia is already one of the world’s biggest raw cane producers.
