FORMER African champion Charles Muhangi will not feature again on the local rally scene this year.
He will miss the remaining three major events including the prestigious TOTAL Pearl of Africa rally due in September 5-7. He will return next year.
“The environment is not conducive. I am leaving the sport for those who are happy with the trend of events,” said outspoken Muhangi, who is required to seek consent and apologise for past misdeeds with MOSAC and UMOSPOC before he competes in their events. He refused to adhere to the conditions.
Muhangi, a strong critic of Ugandan rally officials, told The New Vision that he is instead considering testing his “Ekitaguriiro” in the Rwanda round of the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) series in August.
Muhangi, who owns the largest stable of rally cars in the country: A Subaru Impreza WRC, Subaru Impreza group A ‘Ekitaguriiro’, Mitsubishi Evo6, Mitsubishi Evo2 and Lancia Intergrale, said he was unhappy that the prevailing conditions, and ill luck, have forced him to keep his cars.
“Whenever I drive something bad comes up, the cars will be redundant but it is beyond my control. Vehicles can be destroyed or sold and life continues but if life is destroyed it is the end,” said Muhangi, who has been involved in accidents on several occasions.
Muhangi, who last competed in a National Rally Championship event in February, has been competing only in sprints. Ends
