THE Police have arrested the Bugerere Local Council chairman, who reportedly raped his mother and later performed a ritual to appease the gods, reports Anne Mugisa.
Police Spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said the LC1 chairman of Bugadu village, Samuel Kigongo, raped his widowed mother several times in an attempt to chase her from land her husband left her.
He said the woman’s husband died in 1993 and left land in Bugerere to her.
Mugenyi said the suspect inherited his father’s land in Busoga, but he was not happy because he wanted the one inherited by his mother.
Mugenyi said the suspect attacked his mother in the absence of his siblings and each time she reported to the parish chief who hushed the matter. He said that the third time, the chief told the victim to report to an NGO, the Human Rights and Civic Awareness in Kayunga.
He said that the Parish chief and the NGO made the man pay a fine to the mother and performed rituals to appease the gods, after which he went into hiding.
The NGO and the Parish chief made Kigongo pay a fine of a goat, a chicken and banana beer.
Kigongo, who has two wives, allegedly told his mother as she shouted for help, that since he was the father’s heir, he also took over as her husband.
The media reported recently that the Police in Kayunga released Kigongo, saying they could not find a case against him. Parliament has demanded that internal affairs minister Ruhakana Rugunda intervenes.
