THE officer-in-charge of vehicle inspection in Kampala was yesterday charged and remanded to Luzira prison on charges of abuse of office.

ASP Ronald Kamya, who claimed his colleagues in the Police Force were accusing him out of spite, was accused of fraudulently issuing certificates of driving competence to more than 50 people in and around Kampala.

Kamya, 39, of Bunga, is charged with 15 counts of abuse of office.

He denied the charges and was remanded until July 14, when his case comes up for mention.

Presiding magistrate Mary Babirye advised Kamya to apply for bail in the High Court because her court did not have jurisdiction over the case.

Prosecution led by Brian Makweta told court that Kamya acquired and issued false certificates.

Kamya’s lawyer McDusman Kabega urged the prosecution to speed up their investigations.
