THE Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is ready to demolish eight houses lying in high voltage transmission lines at Mulimira Zone in Bukoto, a city suburb.

THE Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is ready to demolish eight houses lying in high voltage transmission lines at Mulimira Zone in Bukoto, a city suburb.

UETCL officials said this will be done by tomorrow.

Florence Nakaayi reports that the residents to be affected are those whose houses were built 15 metres from the pylons (transmission lines). This was revealed by the company’s way leaves officer, John Jjuuko, at Naguru Community Centre, while sensitising Nakawa Division leaders about the operation.

Stressing the need for evicting people near the pylons, Jjuuko said people living in the way leave area (15 metres from the pylons) are at a risk of being infected with diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

He said the high tense pylons have 50 times more energy than those used in homes. Jjuuko added that any creature that gets within 40ft of the wire is reduced to ashes.
UETCL is undergoing an operation throughout the country to clear the way leaves corridor and evict people using the area.

However, before demolition, the company gives a 30-day notice to the property owners.
The owners are later compensated after reaching an agreement with the company.

Jjuuko said the people who refuse to respond will be taken to court. The division chairman, Protazio Kintu, advised the local council leaders to ask residents to co-operate with UETCL and stop selling off the affected plots.
