The Police in Kampala have warned visa seekers to the United Kingdom against queuing at the British High Commission before the opening time, reports Savio Kyambadde.

Kampala Central Police Station divisional Police commander Francis Okello told the New Vision during an interview in his office yesterday that there were increasing cases of members of the public losing money to con-men who promised to secure visas for them.

Okello said there have been cases of lost property during the wee hours of the morning when visa seekers line up at the High Commission on Parliament Avenue.

“Why do we have people lining up at this place as early as 3:00am when there is even no one to attend to them in the offices?” Okello asked.

“As far as I know, these offices open after 7:00am and until this time, there is no business to be conducted at this section of the high commission,” he added.

Okello said there had been several cases especially of ladies complaining of loss of money in the range of two to three hundred thousand shillings to thugs locally known as kanyamas, on condition of securing them places at the commission or visas to the United Kingdom.

“We hereby warn the public to stop coming early and arrive at the right time to reduce the security risks for both their life and property as well as the British High Commission.”
