THE United Nations peace mission in the Congo (MONUC) is refurbishing Kasese Airfield to enable it handle their heavy load aircrafts.

A source at the airfield said MONUC would soon begin airlifting heavy food loads to Kasese enrooted to the troubled Eastern DR Congo region of Ituri, where thousands of people are currently living in refugee camps.

“The runway here (Kasese airfield) is not firm enough to handle heavily loaded Aircrafts. So MONUC wants to compact it afresh and probably put tarmac,” the source said.

About two months ago, MONUC established its supplies base in Kasese for its relief operations in the Ituri region.

The New Vision recently saw a heavy bulldozer levelling the ground at the two-kilometre runway, while another was fuelling.

However, an attempt by The New Vision to get a comment from the MONUC officials was fruitless.

The doors to their offices and residences at Kamaiba, west of Kasese town centre, were closed.

Kasese Airfield is also being used as a stop-over for the UN peace-keeping force in Eastern DR Congo.

MONUC moved to the DR Congo to oversee settlement of conflicts there. The peacekeepers are also using Entebbe airbase.
