Running away from paying graduated tax in Masaka district will now be harder following the privatisation of tax collection by the district.

Vincent Sempija, the LC5 chairman, told MPs in Kampala recently that officials were uncomfortable with collecting tax from residents.

“It is a better method (privatisation) of collecting the tax. It is better than arresting people. Though we do not yet collect all the money,” he said.

Sempija led a team from the district which appeared before Parliament’s committee on public service and local government.

Yiga Anthony (Kalungu West ) chaired the meeting. Sempija blamed the Government for “telling people to construct over 300 fishponds and not giving them fish to breed for export.”

“When we ask for the fish, sometimes they are sent in small polythene bags (buvera) and they are dead,” he said.

He said the district was planing to breed large numbers of goats for export. He said importers of goats in Saudi Arabia demand about 5,000 goats a week.

Kibondwe Ssalongo, the chief finance officer, protested a budget cut for the district.
