UGANDA Sports Press Association (USPA) made an exception in its 2003 annual gala by not only rewarding sports achievers, but also recognising sponsors who have contributed unreservedly towards sports development.

Entrepreneur David Katumwa and athletics enthusiast Michael Ezra were the distinguished recipients of the two appreciative USPA shields on offer.

The simple genius of USPA’s initiative aside, few can argue with the fact that the honoured pair have taken on the appearance of Ugandan sport’s patron saints during the past year.

Katumwa has become the embodiment of generosity as far as all sports are concerned. He has offered jerseys to The Cranes, given boxing kits to The Bombers and come to the rescue of various other sports squads.

Ezra has singlehandedly remedied athletics’ serial cash ailment by sinking his personal fortune into the sport.

The duo has, unlike other sports stakeholders who hopelessly look up to government, taken the lead in promoting their first passion — sports.

Ugandan sport will only ascend to the next level through such selfless and noble contributions. Government should only be turned to as the ultimate resort!
