THE Government has relaxed the tradition of recruiting experienced public servants and opened up for fresh graduates, a move that will take hundreds of them off the streets.

The Secretary of the Public Service Commission (PSC), Martin Lagara, told a parliamentary committee that permanent secretaries were instructed to declare all vacant posts in their ministries to be filled by fresh graduates.

Lagara’s was reacting to questions as to why many posts remain vacant in the public service and why some officials work in acting capacity for many years.

“It was agreed at a permanent secretaries’ meeting that they declare all posts to which fresh graduates can be considered. They are beginning to come in,” Lagara said.

The commission is in charge of recruitment.
