<b>LC5 pleads<br>MAYUGE</b> — The district LC5 chairman, Bakali Ikoba Tigawalana, yesterday requested the High Court to release him on bail pending his trial for murder.

MAYUGE
— The district LC5 chairman, Bakali Ikoba Tigawalana, yesterday requested the High Court to release him on bail pending his trial for murder. Through his lawyers Blaze Babigumira and Richard Mwebembezi, Tigawalana told Justice Vincent Rwamisazi Kagaba that he is suffering from asthma and hypertension, which aggravated following his incarceration early this year. Tigawalana is jointly charged with three UPDF soldiers for allegedly murdering a bodaboda operator, Fred Musiitwa.

— The Gulu University secretary has absconded from duty, Parliament has heard. Vice-chancellor Nyeko Pen Mogi told the committee on social services on Tuesday that Dr. Tikodri had been absent since April 2003. Nyeko and other heads of institutions of higher learning were appearing before the committee, which is scrutinising the education ministry budget.

Dradiga case
KAMPALA
— The General Court Martial has been asked to acquit Lt. Col. Mike Dradiga, the UPDF commander of the Eastern Region Reserve Forces, of one of the criminal charges against him. The court’s defence counsel, Sgt. Mugerwa Lukwago, yesterday told the court that the State had failed to prove the case of absence from duty without official leave against his client.

MASINDI
— A total of 800 Police recruits have started training at Masindi Police Training School, the Commissioner for Training, Frederick Iga, yesterday said. He said the recruits would undergo a nine-month training before being passed out as Police Constables. Iga said the recruitment drive would run for four years.
