AFRICA Rally Championship leader Rueda Fernando who led throughout held off a late recovery by Ugandan Moses Lumala to win the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla rally yesterday.
The South Africa-based Spaniard's lead was reduced to two minutes 30 seconds in the last section when he knocked a child dead. The section was cancelled and later struck off after Rwanda's Nathalie Cox knocked another child.
The child was in the middle of the road staring at a chopper carrying officials.
Rueda, who extended his ARC tally to 40 points — 27 clear of Zambian Munna Singh, is likely to clinch the title in the TOTAL Uganda Pearl rally September 5-7.
“The car has taken a beating. Moses gave us a challenge, he kept us on our toes,” Rueda said.
Caltex Team's Lumala was gracious. “It has prepared me for Pearl.”
Ugandan Bob Roberts in a Toyota Celica returned ninth in the event that had 13 finishers out of 20 starters.
