THIRTY cartons of contraband Supermatch cigarettes have been impounded being smuggled into Uganda on a UPDF truck near Malaba on Malaba-Tororo road.

The double-cabin pick-up truck was impounded by the UPDF attached to the Special Revenue Protection Services (SRPS) on Monday at 2:30am. Two of its occupants fled into the bush. The driver, Pte Fred Namukwana, was arrested.

The SRPS eastern Uganda chief, Lt. Moses Ikiriza, said two guns were found in the vehicle with 170 bullets. The cigarettes worth over sh10m were in boxes containing small boxes of 20 cigarettes each and properly covered with an army tent. Ikiriza said each carton was worth sh350,000.

Ikiriza said at Jinja Customs offices yesterday that the driver and the cigarettes would be handed over to the army command.

Ikiriza said, “We exercise zero tolerance on the indisciplined. Smuggling of Supermatch is very rampant. Our stores are full but nobody is above the law.”
