PEER educators in various parts of Kasese district have reported an acute shortage of condoms following a high demand especially in rural trading centres.

“The demand for condoms is increasing each day and most of the customers are aged between nine and 25 years. This has forced us to give only one packet containing three pieces to whoever comes for them,” a peer educator, Joseph Kasibirehe, told The New Vision recently.

Kasibirehe, who is the chairman of Kanyasti Parish Development Committee (PDC) under the support of UNICEF, said the high demand for condoms was due to intensive sensitisation about HIV/AIDS, which he said, had reached every home in the area.

“On several occasions, we have run out of condoms. We supply them to pupils, students and villagers,” Kasibirehe said.

Asked whether some counselling was being done before a condom is given to a nine-year-old pupil, Kasiibirehe said, “We fear that if we counsel them they may fear to come again for the condoms.”

Kitholhu sub-county chairman Augustine Masereka also said condom use seemed to have taken root, especially among the youth.
