THE Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), Jinja branch, have opposed the endorsement of Dr. Paul Ssemogerere as the Democratic Party (DP) candidate for the 2006 presidential elections.

DP Jinja branch chairman George Mawanda and secretary Ben Isiko last week issued a statement saying the district had endorsed Ssemmogerere as the party’s presidential candidate because of his “reconciliatory and honest political stature.”

“We clearly say, ‘No’,” the party’s youth wingers said in a statement signed by the Jinja branch chairman, Saulo Nsogambi and general secretary, Meddie Mbentyo, on August 6.

They said because of the anticipated opening up of political space for political parties, DP’s candidate must be chosen by the delegates conference, according to the provisions of the party constitution.

“It is unfortunate that some of our elders are ignorant of our constitution that clearly requires us to hold a delegates conference, which conference we are yet to have due to political gambling,” the statement said.

“It is therefore unwise to endorse Dr. Ssemogerere when we have not yet held party elections. This provokes us to ask, ‘who told them (elders) that we are going to re-elect Dr. Ssemogerere come the delegates conference?” they asked.
