ENTEBBE Handling Services Limited (ENHAS) will pay over sh1bn as terminal benefits to over 100 former employees.
This follows a High Court ruling in a dispute that was initially between the Uganda Airlines Corporation and the ground cargo handlers at Entebbe International Airport concerning their terminal benefits.
High Court judge, John Patrick Tabaro, yesterday, ruled that the ex-employees, who are entitled to the package were those that were either retired or declared redundant.
“The employees, who were dismissed for misconduct cannot claim any benefits other than those offered in their letters of dismissal,” Tabaro said.
The ex-employees claimed sh1,365,094,195 against ENHAS, which they alleged remained unsettled at the time the Uganda Airlines Corporation handed them over to ENHAS.
The judge agreed with Augustine Ssemakula of Ssemakula and Company Advocates, the lawyers for the former employees, that ENHAS had the obligation to pay the claimants, since it had taken them over with all the liabilities from the former Uganda Airlines Corporation that wound up business last year.
. Initially 152 former employees had sued the Uganda Airlines Corporation, but as a result of restructuring, the corporation ceased to engage in ground handling of cargo at Entebbe International Airport. Ends
