TWENTY-TWO lawyers have petitioned the secretary of the Uganda Law Society to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the order issued by the Law Council stopping advocates from expressing views on legal and constitutional matters.

“We, the undersigned members of the Uganda Law Society .... do hereby requisition for a general meeting of the society to be convened in 14 days and held within 30 days from the deposit of this letter,” the lawyers said.

According to a copy of the petition seen by the New Vision, advocates who signed the petition included former presidential candidate Francis Bwengye, John B. Kawanga, Kaggwa Michael, Erias Lukwago, Peter Walubiri, John Magezi, and Joseph Balikuddembe.

They want to consider whether the rule as interpreted by the council, is not discriminatory and an affront to freedom of speech and expression.
