LUBIRI, spurred by Davis Agaba and Tony Magezi, won the Fr Grimes schools chess championship title for the first time yesterday.

The new heroes shrugged off a spirited fight by Namilyango A and last year’s champions Mwiri A at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, Namugongo.

Ndejje lived up to their billing to lift the girls’ crown as the eight round swiss event ended.

But the event’s individual top award went to national junior champion Christine Namaganda of Busoga High. Namaganda was unbeaten with five wins and two draws.

Lubiri won six matches, including the 4-0 success over Busoga High A and two draws. The team’s top performer was Agaba with six wins and two draws.

Namilyango took five matches, drew two and lost against Lubiri.

Perennial campaigners Mwiri won five and drew two to surrender the title.

The meet is in memory of Fr Damien Grimes, former head of Namasagali College. He played a key role in setting up the event over a decade ago.
