MEMBERS of Parliament yesterday criticised the Army over the death sentence passed on a UPDF corporal for cowardice and failure to execute his duties. Cpl. Pimundu Gimaro is to be killed by firing squad, reports Milton Olupot.

The UPDF field court martial sentenced Pimundu who was attached to the Military Police, to death.

He reportedly failed to respond to information that rebels had attacked a village near his station, resulting in the death of eight civilians.

Members of the defence and internal affairs committee called for the repeal of the NRA Statute that provides for the field court martial, without a provision for appeal. Betty Udongo (Nebbi)said soldiers executed in such a manner were used as scapegoats to cover up the failures of the army. She said there were double standards in the army, because when senior officers committed the same offences, they were not killed.

“I have personally given information about the LRA rebels to senior UPDF officers and they never respond but they are not treated like this, I am so hurt,” she said.

Omara Atubo (MP Otuke county) said the law was obsolete.
