THE World Bank is to extend a $100m grant to Uganda towards the second Local Government Development Programme (LGDP II), if Parliament approves a $100m supplementary loan from the bank by Friday, reports Jude Luggya.

“All agreements have been signed. We are only waiting for Parliament’s approval to get this loan and LGDP 11 kicks off possibly this month,’’ local government minister Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere (right), yesterday told MPs on the national economy committee.

The three-year programme is budgeted for $165m, with the Government and the Ministry of Local Government contributing $15m. The first programme that run from 2000 cost $85m.

Kabwegyere appealed to the committee chaired by Kabakumba Labwoni (Bujenje) to approve the loan within the shortest time possible.

“If we appear to be unexcited, there are other people (countries) waiting to take that money anytime. So it’s my plea that Parliament finishes this matter before Friday,’’ Kabwegyere said.
