KAMPALA — The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is finalising the distribution of agricultural aid to at least 9,000 families affected by HIV/AIDS in the West Nile region.

Families headed by women or children were targeted. Each is given 10 kilogrammes of high-yield bean seeds, three of sorghum and hand hoes.

A FAO official, Charles Owach, told IRIN recently that the plan was part of a larger initiative to improve the lives of people affected by HIV/AIDS in the region.

The UN agency said Arua and Yumbe districts were chosen because HIV/AIDS was widespread there.

Government officials commended the initiative.

“This could work well if we can work together and integrate these various plans for developing agriculture in West Nile,” said Carol Kego Laker, a social development specialist in Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture secretariat.

Action Aid’s Semi Angeyo said a wide range of initiatives, including trade, had to reach all the needy in the region. IRIN
