PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday met a delegation of the Uganda Medical Workers Union (UMWU) over the medics’ threat to strike.

UMWU chairman Apollo Nyangasi said the union and Museveni agreed on most issues. Nyangasi said Museveni asked the union to call off the strike. But the final decision can only be taken by the union delegates conference scheduled to meet at Hotel Africana today.

Margaret Ntambaazi, the nurses representative, said there would be another meeting with Museveni this week.

“The meeting will fill in the gaps on professional questions,” she said.

She said Museveni and the union agreed that the new single spine salary structure introduced by the Government last month should have been worked out by sector professionals, not bureaucrats. The strike was slated to begin tomorrow if the Government did not review the salary structure.
