A MASS immunisation drive against measles starts on Wednesday and will continue until Sunday. The intention is to give the measles vaccine to ALL children in Uganda under 15 years old, even if they have already been immunised.
Measles is a common, highly infectious and deadly disease among children that causes skin rash and fever. That is why government and the World Health Organisation are doing their best to eradicate measles worldwide.

Last year there were at 50,000 reported cases of measles in Uganda and around 5,000 of those children died. There may have been more unreported cases and deaths. All those deaths and suffering were unnecessary.

It is very simple to protect your child against measles - just ensure that he or she gets a dose of measles vaccine this week.

It is very safe because the trained health workers will be using a brand new needle and syringe for every child.

Even if your child has already been immunised, you should still cooperate with the mass measles immunisation.

Firstly an additional dose will strengthen you child’s immunity against measles.

Secondly many children have missed immunisation. By cooperating with this blanket immunisation, you are ensuring that all Ugandan children are properly protected against measles. It is your moral responsibility to cooperate.

In fact it is a human rights abuse to fail to have your child is immunised. You are putting your child’s life at risk for no good reason. When governments do that, they are blasted by Human Rights Watch.

Parents must also be responsible and protect their children’s lives, just like governments.
