THE World Food Programme (WFP) has included Teso region among the the world’s hungerspots. It said places with severe food shortage in Teso were increasing.
The UN food agency said hunger and malnutrition were the leading cause of death globally, and asked the international community to step up investment in agriculture.
In its World Food Day message, WPF said donations from the international community were failing to keep up with needs of the world’s hungry.
It said WFP faced the highest global food aid needs in its 40-year history.
It said WFP was faced with a donor shortfall of $600m in its anti-hunger campaign this year, 15% of its $4.3b target.
It identified civil-war battered Liberia, drought-struck Eritrea, the Teso district of Uganda, and North Korea as world hunger flashpoints requiring particular attention.
WFP warned that achieving the world leaders’ goal to halve the number global 800 million hungry people by 2015, was being hampered by low investment in agriculture.
