THE Commissioner General of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Annbrit Aslund, has reportedly chosen not to prosecute key suspects in the sh700m graft case in which 11 URA officials are undergoing trial, court heard on Wednesday.

Robert Esaru, an auditor with URA and the first prosecution witness, said this during cross-examination by Fred Muwema.

Esaru said Susan Kafumbe Mukasa, a senior revenue officer, was one of the officers for prosecution by the audit report but Aslund chose not to prosecute her.

Asked why Kafumbe was not prosecuted, the deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Simon Byabakama, said time had run out and court needed to adjourn.

Esaru said he received a communication from Aslund instructing him to exclude Kafumbe’s name from the list of those to be prosecuted.

“As far as I am concerned, investigations are still going on to find other people who might have caused the loss,” he said.

Esaru was appearing before Buganda Road Court Magistrate Olive Kazarwe to adduce evidence against 11 URA customs officers.
