The Prime Minister (PM), Prof. Apollo Nsibambi met manufacturers on Friday to discuss power supply to industries, according to statement issued by his press unit.

Also present at the meeting were energy and mineral development ministry officials and executives from the electricity companies (generation, transmission and distribution).

The chairman of Uganda Manufacturers Association, Abid Alam, said high power tariffs and unreliable power supply led to high production costs.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Kabagambe Kaliisa, said power supply would be reliable when the urban rehabilition project is completed in December.

He said programmed meters would be available by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company to all the 98 industrial consumers by the end of this year to enable them take advantage of the lower off -peak tariffs.

It was agreed that the ministry of energy carries out free industrial energy audit in order to save about 15% of the power for other users and reduce load shedding.
