KOBS tactician Charles Namakola could be spoilt for choice come Saturday when Uganda encounters Angola.

Namakola will have to carry out a tactical masterstroke that should accommodate the vast talent at his disposal in the U-23 squad.

“We have several good players in camp, good enough really to start any game but we will decide on who to start,” he said.

But the Kobs coach is conscious that the preliminary games against Seychelles exposed his side’s poor level of defending, conceding twice and handing a bulk of possession to the visitors.

Kobs defeated Seychelles 5-4 in the preliminary round to advance to the group stage.

He knows that there will have to be a vast improvement in that department if Uganda are to be regarded as serious contenders.

“We are trying to work on that, especially with the positioning at the back. We will have to start passing the ball better and the good thing is we know that we can do that. We want to start showing that we can play the sort of football that will win you a tournament.

“I think the confidence in this camp has always been at a sensible level. We know what we are good at, we know what we can do and to a certain degree we know what we can’t do. I still think there is room for a little more belief.”

Much of Namakola’s success since taking effective charge in February 2001 has been down to his ability to make players believe in both themselves and their teammates.

Playing down his role in achieving that, he said: “To have good spirit, good morale in a team doesn’t just depend on the manager.”

Angola is expected in Kampala today.
