KAMPALA City Council's determination to demolish illegal structures forced born again Christians to get rid of their biwempe (papyrus) churches, Mayor John Ssebaana Kizito has said.

He said most born again churches in Kampala were illegally built.

“When we began demolishing their churches, they had to launch the Bye-bye Kanisa za Biwempe Operation," Ssebaana said.

The operation, recently launched in Kampala, was a fundraising drive to raise money to replace papyrus churches with modern buildings.

Ssebaana said worshipping structures were not supposed to be constructed in residential areas because they inconvenience people with noise.
