The Bakonzo have been advised not to abuse their developmental and cohesive cultural values under the guise of advocating for gender issues, reports John Nzinjah.
“Advocating for gender balance should not mean that our good, developmental cultural values and those which keep us united be abused and killed,” Brenda Nsubi, a resource person with Akina Mama Wa Africa (AMWA) said on Thursday.
She was addressing a two-day workshop of sub-county leaders at Kasese Catholic Diocese Social Services Hall in Kasese town.
However, Nsubi said cultural practices that undermined development should be condemned.
She advised women to be assertive but aware that whatever they did had an impact on their communities.
AMWA Uganda programme officer Lydia Mbabazi advised leaders at all levels especially women to ensure that they participated in the budgeting processes.
