DEO Akope, made up for his country’s recent soccer defeat at the hands of Rwanda in the Nations Cup qualifiers, by leading a Ugandan clean sweep of the top places in the national golf open in Kigali on Sunday.
The ace golfer (far right) becomes the third Ugandan to win the Rwanda Open. He set the pace with a one over par 73 on day one and two that was followed with a 75 for a three day total of 221 strokes.
Akope’s success follows earlier conquests by Katwiremu, a businessman in Kigali in 2000, and Fort Portal’s George Kituku in 1999.
The 25-year-old Ugandan golf champion, takes over from 2002 hero Mohamed Adam of Tanzania, who missed the 54-hole strokeplay event at Kigali’s par-72 course.
The success is a huge boost for Akope ahead of the Uganda Open in Kampala this week. Entebbe player Akope, completed a hat trick of open wins last year, and is favourite again from tee-off on Thursday.
