THE Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has received sh60b for sustainable use of wildlife and tourism resources.

This includes a loan from the International Development Association and a grant from the Global Environment Facility, the Minister of Trade, Tourism and Industry, Prof. Edward Rugumayo, said on Tuesday.

He was handing over anti-poaching equipment and trucks to UWA in Kampala.

John Nagenda, the chairman of UWA, condemned politicians who campaign on the ticket of settling their people in game parks.

“We protect these areas, but we are under intense pressure.

Politicians must help us to explain the policies to the communities,’’ Nagenda said, adding that wild animals are tourism resources, which should not be killed.

Dr. Arthur Mugisha, the executive director of UWA, said the money would be used in a five-year project that includes poverty alleviation in communities neighbouring parks.

Rugumayo said UWA gives 20% of entry fees collected to communities living next to protected areas.
