Why are teachers being treated so?

SIR— At the beginning of this year, the Ministry of Education transferred some secondary school teachers. The problem came up when salaries of some of these teachers were shifted from their former districts to the new districts.

Teachers who had taught for over 20 years had their salaries slashed to a beginner graduate scale. Others who were graduates have their salaries dropped to the lowest scale of a diploma teacher.

Ever since this issue cropped up, we have filled forms to update our salaries, visited the districts and gone to the Ministry of Public Service to try and find out if this is a new policy governing teachers who are on transfer. We have not got any official explanation why up to now, for the last five months, the Ministry of Public Service has failed to rectify this problem.

We appeal to the IGG to help us find out why some of the teachers transferred to Masaka, Luweero, Pallisa and other districts had their salaries tampered with. We suspect someone is making a difference at the expense of these teachers. Our patience is running out.
