THE parliamentary Muslim caucus last week met opponents of Mufti Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje to resolve the row between the Muslim leaders.

The team, led by the Butambala MP, Hajji Ibrahim Kadunabbi Lubega, was briefed on the plan to select a rival Mufti by Sheik Hassan Kirya.

Kirya, one of the leaders of the anti-Mubajje camp, confirmed the meeting without giving details.
“We all note that Islam in Uganda, in terms of leadership, is at stake and we are trying our best to get the best solution,” Kadunabbi said when contacted.

He said the group would meet Mubajje before concluding the matter. The meeting was held at Prince Kassim Nakibinge’s residence in Kibuli last Thursday.

Muslim ministers were also expected to attend the meeting after members of the Muslim caucus did not show up, sources said.

The delegation of 25 MPs included Faridah Najjuma Kasasa, Asuman Kiyingi, Sofia Nalule, Mariam Nalubega, Zake Kibedi, Lule Mawiya, Abdul Katuntu, Latif Ssebagala, Hussein Kyanjjo, Badru Katongole, and Medi Mulumba.

In the meeting, some MPs opposed the appointment of a rival Mufti and called for the review of the Mecca Agreement, which resolved leadership wrangles between Sheik Obeid Kamulegeya and late Sheik Mulumba.

The Muslim leaders split last year with a section accusing Mubajje of fraudulently selling Muslim property worth sh1b.

The court, however, acquitted Mubajje, Hassan Basajjabalaba and Dr. Edris Kasenene of the charges of fraudulent disposal of Muslim properties, forgery and conspiracy to commit an offence.

The anti-Mubajje group is also planning a special Muslim court on Wednesday to consider the accusations against Mubajje.
