INTERFREIGHT Shipping Agencies, a clearing company, has denied allegations that its workers were involved in the theft of their trailer.

During the festive season, the Police arrested four men suspected of stealing over 1,000 bags of sugar and a trailer.
Earlier, reports indicated that the men were workers of Interfreight and that the trailer belonged to the same company.

Interfreight’s public relations officer, Juliet Kyembabazi, said the trailer belonged to MAT International, a company that exports and imports sugar.
“MAT sub-contracted the trailer,” she explained.

According to a release order from Interfreight, the container on the truck was loaded with Swaziland brown sugar. The sugar was being re-exported to Tri-Star Traders in Sudan.

Kyembabazi said after releasing the goods, it was not Interfreight’s responsibility to take care of them. It is MAT International that was in control of the goods at the time of the theft, she said.

However, one of the officials at MAT International, only identified as Rajab, denied that his company was in control.
“After clearing the goods, they are under the control of our clearing agents,” he explained.

The Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, on Tuesday said besides the fake number plates that were found on the trailer, the suspects also had forged identity cards.

The four suspects are Joseph Kabanda, Yasin Makanga, Yasin Kiiza, and Godfrey Muwanguzi.

The Police, working on a tip-off, trailed the group and found them off-loading the sugar, which they planned to sell at sh4m.
