MOSES Twesigomwe will focus on popularising ‘small’ sports like archery, swimming, wrestling and netball across the country if he unseats Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president Major General Francis Nyangweso at polls this Saturday.

Twesigomwe believes Uganda’s dwindling luck at the Olympic Games can be rejuvenated by setting up National Games every four years to help federations qualify their best for the global games.

In an interview yesterday, Twesigowe said that he wants to open up the conservative UOC administration to all sports federations.

“I have talked to federations and I’m optimistic of victory. Many associations agree with me that we need a change now in order to build a new generation of Olympic stars for 2012 and 2016,” Twesigomwe said.

“There will be change and change for the better because I want to break the mystery in UOC,” the Kyambogo University lecturer said.

Twesigomwe, who is currently head of coaches association at Uganda Athletics Federation, is a former UOC vice-president and is the only other candidate for the post of president. He said he is finalising on a shortlist of his cabinet drawn from all the associations, which he will reveal before the elections.

He hopes to help federations identify and develop talent and extend to the various sports bodies financial assistance from the International Olympic Committee.

“I wonder why UOC and other disciplines like swimming are only concentrated in Kampala. If you went to Gulu and Karamoja, swimming is not known and yet it is a potential.”

UOC affiliates are athletics, boxing, handball, badminton, basketball, taekwondo, cycling, football, hockey, rowing and canoeing, volleyball, archery, tennis, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, netball and shooting.
