LOCAL basketball governing body FUBA will meet today with officials of Anfield Communications to find ways of raising sh84m.

The money is needed for the national team to travel to this month’s Zone Five Africa Championship qualifiers in Rwanda.

With less than two weeks to the tournament, FUBA does not have the money to fund the team but are hopeful Anfield has good news going into today’s crucial meeting.

“They have spoken to over 10 companies and they will brief us about the outcome,” said federation treasurer Chris Kyebambe yesterday.

Anfield’s success in assisting the cash-strapped body will be the difference between Uganda’s participation in the qualifiers or failure thereto, which would attract a $5000 (sh9.8m) fine and a two-year ban from FIBA-sanctioned competitions.

The world ruling body does not, unlike other federations like football, cricket or rugby, fund the local federation but expects registered member countries to honour its events without fail.

Nevertheless, Kyebambe is “confident” Anfield, which signed a contract with the federation specifically for these qualifiers, will deliver the goods.

Last year Anfield famously managed to secure funding worth over sh200m for the inaugural FUFA Awards night.
