TOP seed Duncan Mugabe is optimistic he will negotiate past big serving Rwandan Jean Claude Gasigwa in the Tusker Malt Uganda Open semifinal at Lugogo today.

The 18-year-old Mugabe, who will have the home crowd behind him on centre court acknowledges third seed Gasigwa’s strong shots but believes he will neutralise the Rwandan.

“He has a big serve and forehand but his backhand is not good enough. He’s a tough opponent but I know how I will handle him. I will take the match point by point and see how it goes,” Mugabe stated.

Gasigwa’s undoing is inconsistence which let him down in the ITF East African money circuit semifinal that he lost to dreadlocked Zimbabwean Martin Dzuwa in Burundi.

Mugabe who is over 10 years younger than Gasigwa will rely on his terrific pace to bring down his vastly experienced opponent.

“To manage him I will go for pace variation and will make him move a lot on court. This is a match I have to do my best,” Mugabe said.

Gasigwa who beat Dzuwa in the final of ITF East African money circuit in Kigali last weekend will be up against Mugabe for the first time.

Asked to compare Gasigwa with Dzuwa, Mugabe said, “I can’t tell who is better. They are very unpredictable.”

Dzuwa will face-off with Kenyan Francis Rogoi in the other semi-final.
