UGANDANS have been encouraged to invest more resources to create development. The deputy Japanese ambassador, Masaki Shiga, cited investment in education as the major factor that triggered off industrialisation and development in Japan.

Shiga was commissioning a sh126m project at Riverside High School in Busitema sub-county in Busia district on Thursday.

The money was used to construct two-classroom blocks, a perimeter fence, a four-stance VIP toilet latrine, buying 280 desks and tables, 280 stools and auditing and drilling a borehole that serves the school and the community.

Shiga noted that Uganda’s tax base was still low and inadequate to expand the educational infrastructure to meet the demand from the increasing number of students.

He said the Japanese Government supported health, water and sanitation and education projects at the grassroots.

The district chairperson, Patrick Wedakule, urged the community to show patriotism by owning the school.

Busia district Woman Member of Parliament Rose Munyira advised the community not to wait for the Government to initiate programmes, but instead start them locally and lobby support “when there is something to show”.
