Local govts must be accountable
- Last week you ran a story saying the World Bank and the Government had launched a new programme to replace the Local Government Development Programmes. This is good news. However, one of the major failures of local governments is lack of accountability. Despite various laws, funds are mis-used and financial regulations are not followed. Local leaders know how difficult administration is without funds. I, therefore, appeal to them to use the funds well. If the reported corruption in local governments is not dealt with, donors might stop funding them.

Destroy all illegal structures
- Arua Municipality has been demolishing illegal structures. However, there has been some confusion in the process. While some structures have been demolished, others have been saved. What is the criteria used in the destruction of these structures? Why are some left out and others destroyed? If this was a genuine attempt to rid the town of illegal structures, nobody would be fighting it.

Leaders should buy fire equipment
- Your story on local governments’ role in fighting fires was an eye-opener. However, I did not buy the assertion that fire fighting equipment is expensive. Municipalities have budgets ranging from sh5b to sh 10b every financial year, yet a fire tender costs about sh500m. If a locality cannot buy the equipment alone, they can partner. For example, Kira and Mukono town councils can buy a single truck. This way, the country will have more fire fighting trucks.
