TEN University teams have confirmed entry in the first national woodball championship due in Kyambogo this weekend.

Woodball is a new field sport that has taken root most especially in the tertiary education institutions.

Players use a mallet to hit a ball targeted to go through a wooden gate. Like in golf, the fewer the shots to the gate, the better is the score. The player with the fewest shots emerges winner.

The one-day event sponsored by Crown Beverages has also drawn corporate teams including Bank of Uganda and UPDF, according to Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) secretary Godwin Senyondo.

The Kyambogo Open is one of the of a series of events lined up to give local players a build-up towards the Kampala 2010 FISU World University Woodball Championships.

UWbF has since the beginning of the year 2009 concentrated on organising technical courses mainly in Central Uganda to popularise the sport and prepare players for the forthcoming national competitions.

Next on the UWbF calendar will be the second edition of the MTN Inter-University Championships at KIU and the Ndejje University Open in April.

Uganda was the first African country to introduce the field sport in 2006. Under UWbF president Mark Kayongo, efforts are on to spread the game.

The first international competition was at the recent East Africa University Games.
