ABOUT 400 Ugandan information and communications technology (ICT) experts are needed by Mauritius, the chairperson of the board of investment of Mauritius, told the presidential investors round table last week.

Maurice Lam, said Mauritius wants to focus on ICT and would welcome Ugandan experts to help it develop the sector.

“We are venturing into the ICT sector with Google, Microsoft and CISCO already in the country.
“However, we need 400 ICT experts and if there are any in this country, who want to join us, we shall be glad to take them on,” Lam said at the Imperial Royale Hotel.

Lam was in the country at the invitation of the Uganda Investment Authority to share Mauritius’ experience on how it has managed to attract a lot of foreign investors. He advised developing countries to view the global financial crisis as an opportunity rather than a curse because it is full of opportunities.

Lam also noted that the removal of hindrances to investment like trading licenses, which increase costs of doing business, building and land use policies helped Mauritius attract investors. “You can also emulate this approach because it reduces corruption and delays.”
