The Bakonzo and Bamba cultural leader, Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, has advised women in the region to form as many micro-finance groups as possible, writes John Nzinjah.

Mumbere said micro-finance institutions were the most appropriate facility to fight poverty in the households. He also urged the women to revive the positive aspects of the African heritage, noting that a community without culture cannot not develop.

He argued that not everything African was backward as some people thought. Flanked by his wife Nyabaghole Agnes Ithungu and some members of the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu administration, the Omusinga said development partners were interested in supporting creative and self-reliant groups.

He was addressing a group of women from Busongora who visited his palace near Kasese town on Tuesday. Mubere attacked the colonialists for destroying the African culture

“The Whites destroyed the African traditional medicine, mining and art,” he said. “Their selfish attitude left us miles away from development.”

The Omusinga explained that the colonialists successfully used the Bible to win over the Africans and turned them against their values and practices.
