Fire gutted a Plastic Recycling Industries’ plant in Nakawa on Friday, destroying property worth millions of shillings. Ronald Ngutioko, the plant’s technical manager, said the fire started shortly after 7:00pm. “A worker was welding a boiler in the compound when sparks landed on plastic materials, which caught fire. The fire spread, setting the plant ablaze,” said Ngutioko. He explained that 200 tonnes of plastic materials and water tanks, that were to be recycled, were destroyed. The Police fire brigade and Fire Masters, a private company, put out the fire after two hours.

Ssempa raps Pope critics

Pastor Martin Ssempa, an HIV/AIDS activist, has condemned people who are attacking the Pope for his stand against the use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Ssempa said such people had no credibility. He praised Pope Benedict for saying condoms could exacerbate the problem. The Pope’s message was contained in a statement sent to the Rome-based LifeSiteNews.com on Friday. Ssempa said the real cause of the spread of the disease was promiscuity driven by immorality.

700 ready to plead guilty
- KAMPALA
High Court judge Joseph Murangira has said there are 700 men in Luzira Prison charged with defilement, who are ready to plead guilty. Murangira on Thursday cautioned three man at Nakawa Circuit after they pleaded guilty. The men had spent over three years on remand. Murangira said out of the 71 cases he had tried during the one month criminal session, 70 involved defilers, who pleaded guilty.

Prof. Luboobi ill
- KAMPALA
Makerere University vice-chancellor Prof. Livingstone Luboobi is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in Mulago Hospital. Luboobi was taken ill on Thursday following a high blood pressure complication, family sources said yesterday. The university spokesperson, Gilbert Kadilo, yesterday said his condition was stable and that he was out of danger. He said Luboobi, 64, underwent a minor surgery on Friday.
