KCC FC’s aspirations of registering a rare positive away result were dealt a psychological blow on arrival in Johannesburg yesterday.

The omens already appear to be against the Ugandan side for whom, aside from making their second CAF/MTN Champions League second leg encounter without reserve defender Omar Hitmana, had their food baggage confiscated.

While the team’s residence Hotel Protea is far ideal for the league champions, the team arrived to the shocking revelation that Uganda’s most precious and hailed dish of ‘matooke and groundnuts’ was among the items barred from import into the 2010 World Cup hosting nation.

“Forget about that food and move to your hotel. It is among the items prohibited from coming into this country,” shouted one female Police staff.

KCC were later only permitted to carry maize floor with them.

“Since when did this start. We won’t leave this airport without our food,” KCC team captain Sam Mubiru shouted back.

The KCC skipper however could only look on helplessly as teammate Tommy Okello was being quizzed by the airport police staff to identify a powder that had been wrapped in polythene, uncovered from his luggage during a routine check-up.

The KCC midfielder himself could not explain clearly what the powdered substance was, tempting the officials to conclude it had been juju being sneaked into the country to help KCC negotiate their potential return match against home team, SuperSport United.

SuperSport and Ugandan-born goalkeeper Dennis Onyango recieved the team on arrival and kept the entire day with the team at their Protrea Hotel.

KCC need to win or a draw to progress to the third round of the tournament.

The reigning South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions SuperSport will host KCC at Witwatersrand’s Milpark Stadium and not their favourite home ground in Pretoria at the Super Stadium.

Milpark is home ground to the Wits University soccer team – Bidvest Wits. The stadium has a sitting capacity of 5,000 people.
