FIRST Lady and state minister for Karamoja Janet Museveni has launched a sh650m water project for Kangole in Matany Sub-County, Moroto.

The Kangole water works is one of the Government projects to provide safe water to the communities in an area that has been dogged by a chronic water scarcity.

The water works situated in Kangole trading centre will serve between 50,000 to 100,000 people.

Karamoja is substantially drier than the rest of Uganda, with only one rainy season per year and an agro-pastoral livelihood system. Due to climate change, rains have become unpredictable, unreliable and shorter.

According to the office of the Minister for Karamoja, the people had resorted to excavating dry riverbeds to access water that lies under the mud. The officials said the water is not clean and exposes the people to disease.

Last month, the Meteorology Department said the country would get favourable rainfall, except Karamoja.

The grim predictions for Karamoja have raised fears of a continuation of severe drought which would make the current food shortage worse.
