Mugisa defies Easter rain to win Kigezi Open

TORO Club’s Frank Mugisa defied heavy rain on Easter Sunday, shooting a closing round of 73 to win the Kigezi Easter Golf Open in Kabale.

TORO Club’s Frank Mugisa defied heavy rain on Easter Sunday, shooting a closing round of 73 to win the Kigezi Easter Golf Open in Kabale.

Mugisa who wound up with an aggregate of 145 in the two-day event, beat national champion Vincent Byamukama by three strokes to claim his maiden victory of the season.

Mugisa who was three shots off the pace in the opening round on Saturday rose to the top as day-one leader Benson Sande collapsed under the heavy downpour that saw him finish in fourth place. He was six shots behind the eventual winner.

Victory for Mugisa lifted him from fifth to second in the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship with 15 points, just one behind leader Byamukama.

The tournament sponsored by Crane Bank saw Arnold Muhumuza (150) come third while Titus Okong and Sande tied for fourth.

In the sh4m professional event, Deo Akope who led on day one with 70, carded 74 in the second round but still won with an aggregate of 144.

Akope beat George Olayo and Herman Mutaawe, who shared second spot, by five strokes.

Godfrey Mande and Denis Anguyo also tied in fourth position on 150.

Kabale’s Shiella Kesiime with 127 nett won the women while Melon Kyomugisha (136 nett) was second.
