FOUR local leaders in Karamoja have been arrested for allegedly selling seeds supplied by the Government for free distribution to the farmers.

Loletekia LC1 chairperson, Luka Lote, LC3 councillor Philemon Modo and two others whose names could not be established, were detained at Moroto Police Station following a tip-off by the LC3 chairperson of Nadunget sub-county, Raphael Eritoi.

“It is unfortunate that some local leaders are extorting money from the people for a service which is meant to be free,” Eritoi said.

The leaders allegedly demanded for sh1,500 from the residents to be included on the list of beneficiaries.

“The LCs told us that the seeds would be for sale. They said the free ones would be sent by the Government later,” said Anna Nangiro, a resident.

The Moroto criminal investigations chief, Samuel Dowan, said investigations were ongoing.
